Safe travels: Tips for healthy holiday trips

As the holiday season nears, many of us are gearing up for travel. From bustling airports to long car rides, staying healthy while on the move can be challenging. However, with a few proactive steps, you can stay comfortable and well this holiday season.

Whether you're driving locally, embarking on a road trip, or flying across the globe, here are a few practical tips for a healthy journey.

Airline Travel

Air travel during the holidays can be hectic, with crowded terminals and packed flights. Taking steps to safeguard your health can make your journey smoother and safer.

  • Keep your hands clean: Handwashing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep yourself healthy, no matter the season. The CDC cites it as the single most important infection control measure when it comes to keeping yourself and others free of illness. Use soap and water whenever possible, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Germs can spread from all sorts of surfaces in high traffic areas like restaurants, malls, shops and airports.
  • Sanitize your surroundings: Although airlines and airports strive to create safe environments for you, the holidays are especially busy and we can never be too careful. For your peace of mind, you can use disinfecting wipes to clean high-touch surfaces such as tray tables, seat belts, armrests, and touch screens.
  • Consider masking up and getting vaccinated: Masks are optional in most places, but wearing a high-quality mask during crowded times like boarding can help reduce exposure to airborne illnesses. Also remember that the holiday season is also flu season, and Covid-19 is still with us. Getting your flu shot and your Covid-19 vaccine can help you avoid those ailments during the holidays.
  • Keep your strength up: Drink plenty of water before and during your flight. Pack snacks like fruits, nuts, or protein bars to keep your energy levels up. If possible, stand up and stretch during the flight to improve circulation and help you stay limber.
  • Check vaccination requirements for international travel: Depending on your destination, you may need specific vaccinations or preventive medications. So before you head overseas, make sure that you have fulfilled the requirements for your destination.

Travel by Car

While some of us may be flying across the country, many travel by car for the holidays. Though you will likely not face the same concerns as you might on a flight, keep the following in mind on a road trip.

  • Prioritize driver safety: A long road trip relies on the people driving to make it safely to their destination. Make sure all drivers are rested and alert. On long trips, splitting up driving responsibilities is perfectly reasonable to assure everyone’s safety. If driving in areas that experience winter weather, take warm clothing or blankets and extra food.
  • Plan regular breaks: Sitting in one place for too long can contribute to various health concerns, so try to stop periodically to stretch, move around, and relieve eye strain. Short walks can also help reduce fatigue and improve blood flow.
  • Prioritize comfort and posture: Adjust your seat and use lumbar support if needed to prevent back and neck pain. Encourage everyone to buckle up and stay comfortable.

Traveling with Kids

Traveling with children adds another layer of complexity, but can also be an incredibly rewarding experience if you’re prepared.

  • Bring essentials: Pack a dedicated bag with snacks, wipes, diapers (if needed), and toys to keep children entertained and comfortable. Include child-safe medications, basic first-aid supplies, and any prescriptions. Be prepared for common issues like motion sickness or upset stomachs.
  • Stick to routines: Try to maintain regular meal and sleep schedules as much as possible. Familiar bedtime items, like blankets or stuffed animals, can provide comfort and consistency.
  • Prepare activities: Long trips can be challenging for kids. Bring travel-friendly games, coloring books, or download movies to keep them occupied.

Fun (and healthy) in the sun

Finally, if you're planning to travel to a sunny destination this winter, keep these tips in mind:

  • Plan activities wisely: Schedule outdoor excursions during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late afternoon, to avoid the midday heat. Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to prevent overheating. Carry a reusable water bottle and aim to drink water regularly throughout the day.
  • Protect your skin from the sun: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Wear sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and light, breathable clothing for added protection.
  • Be beach-ready: If you’re heading to the coast, be mindful of beach safety. Wear water shoes to protect against hot sand and sharp objects, follow local swimming guidelines, and take breaks in the shade to avoid overheating and sunburn.
